Surely you have heard many times the phrase: you can already see the Cathedral!<\/p>\n<p>This mountain, located on the outskirts of Santiago de Compostela, 5 km from entering the city, has played a crucial role in the lives of pilgrims and has witnessed countless stories of effort, reflection and companionship.<\/p>\n<p>The name Monte do Gozo, means in Spanish, \"Mount of Joy\". This name is due to the fact that from this point pilgrims can see for the first time the towers of the Cathedral of Santiago, hence the joy it produces among pilgrims. It is an exciting moment in the journey, as it marks the end of a journey full of challenges and the beginning of the reward of reaching Santiago de Compostela.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, Monte do Gozo has been a resting place for pilgrims before their final entry into Santiago. From here, there is a panoramic view of the city that becomes a great reminder of the distance travelled and the obstacles overcome on the way. At this moment, joy and emotion take hold of the pilgrims, marking the end of this unforgettable journey.<\/p>\n<p>The Mount is presided over by a monument featuring two pilgrims; it was erected in 1993 in honour of Pope John Paul II's 1989 visit to the Mount. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.viajeroscanallas.es\/en\/what-to-do-in-santiago-de-compostela\/\">Santiago de Compostela<\/a> on the occasion of World Youth Day. This religious event helped to publicise the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.viajeroscanallas.es\/en\/other-ways-of-doing-the-camino-de-santiago\/\">Camino de Santiago<\/a> worldwide, bringing together more than 100,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>As a fact of interest, Monte do Gozo is the second most sought after place by pilgrims after the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Many pilgrims use this time to reflect on their journey, recall lessons learned along the way, return to why they have made this journey and contemplate the meaning of their pilgrimage. They have turned it into a meeting place to exchange stories, share experiences and strengthen ties between fellow travellers.
