Frequently asked questions about the French Way

Can I take my dog loose on the Camino?

In rural areas, many do this, but regulations require the dog to be on a leash, especially in urban areas, road crossings or areas with livestock. We recommend using a long or extendable lead.

Does my dog need any special documents?

Yes: the veterinary booklet with up to date vaccinations (especially rabies) and be identified with a microchip. We also recommend wearing a muzzle for specific moments and for the requirements of the area or transport.

How do I manage my dog's food on the road?

There are several options, you can carry it from home (if you request the transport of backpacks we will carry it for you), or buy it in supermarkets along the Camino.

How far can a dog walk per day?

This will depend on the size of your dog, but an average of 20-25km a day is manageable for most dogs if they are in good shape. It is important to rest, hydrate well and check their paws every day.

What training can I do with my dog?

Start with progressive walks weeks in advance and get your dog used to the harness and varied terrain. Practice frequent stops and hydration, introduce 10-15 km walks as a baseline and have a pre-trip vet check.

What do I do if my dog gets hurt or overtired?

In the Canalla Guide there is a section with telephone numbers for veterinary assistance and alternative transport if your dog for some reason cannot continue on the Camino. You can also make shorter sections and more stops to give your dog more rest, hydrate him every 30 - 60 minutes, use a cream or boots for his pads and don't force him to continue if he is exhausted. Remember that he is here to enjoy himself and create unique memories together.

What should I bring for my dog?

    Essential:

    • Comfortable harness / leash
    • Excrement bags
    • Portable drinking fountain
    • Small towel
    • Basic first aid kit: pad protector, gauze and iodine.
    • Your usual meal if you decide to take it on your own
    • A blanket and a bed to sleep on

Does the dog receive the Compostela?

Not officially. The Compostela is for people, but we give a Dog Diploma because they also deserve to have the recognition they deserve.

What type of dog is ideal for the Camino?

More important than race is the physical condition . Some breeds that tend to adapt well:

    • Border Collie
    • Labrador Retriever
    • German Shepherd
    • Golden Retriever
    • Medium-sized, active mongrel dogs

We do not recommend this with brachycephalic breeds (Bulldogs, Pugs) or very small breeds if they are not used to long walks.
