Why is this journey so important?
Imagine this: you have just landed in Santiago with your backpack full of illusion, ready to start your Camino from Sarria... but you have no idea how to get there. Don't worry, you are not the only one. In fact, it is one of the questions that most of those who join Viajeros Canallas ask us. And believe me, choosing the right way to get from the airport to Sarria can be the perfect start...or not so much.
I tell you everything you need to know -without detours, without technicalities- and at the end I give you the trick that we use to start the Camino on the right foot (never better said).
Where exactly to land?
Santiago-Rosalia de Castro Airport (SCQ) is about 12 km from the centre of Santiago. But here's the kicker: Sarria is more than 120 km away, to the northeast, in the province of Lugo.
In other words, you don't just get there and walk. You have to move around a bit before you really start walking.
What is the best way to get from Santiago airport to Sarria?
Here are the main options, with the good, the bad and my personal opinion.
Option 1: Private transfer
- The most comfortable. It picks you up at the airport and drops you off at your accommodation in Sarria.
- Ideal if you arrive tired from your flight or short on time.
- No waiting, no juggling with schedules.
- You can share it with other pilgrims (and start making friends before you walk!).
Option 2: Public bus
- It is cheap but also a bit long.
- The most popular option is by bus with the Monbus/Flixbus company, either direct if it suits your timetable or via Lugo, where there are more timetable combinations.
Option 3: Train from Santiago
- Comfortable if you organise yourself well.
- You need to go first to Santiago train station (15-20 minutes by bus or taxi).
- The train takes you to Sarria with a journey time of about 2h 30 min.
- However, there are not many direct trains every day, so keep an eye on the timetables!
Scoundrel advice: Check train tickets on the Renfe website in advance. Seats sell out quickly in high season.
Option 4: Taxi (the fast one... but a bit more expensive)
- Direct and without waiting.
- The fastest if you are travelling alone or at a late hour.
- But it may cost you more than the other options, so it is only recommended if you hurry or share with others.
