Climbing the Calderón Hondo Volcano: an essential route in Fuerteventura
Can you imagine crowning a relatively easy volcano, with wild views of the sea and the neighbouring island of Lanzarote, amidst landscapes of lava and silence? This is how our invitation to climb the Calderón Hondo Volcano starts, one of those routes that once you do it, you know you will never forget it.
In this article of Viajeros Canallas we are going to tell you in detail why this experience in Fuerteventura deserves a place on your list, how to prepare it, what you will see and how to integrate it with our 2026 trips to the north of the island.
Why is this route a must?
When we visit Fuerteventura, we always ask ourselves: “And which trail will make us vibrate?” And without a doubt, the ascent to the Calderón Hondo Volcano is among the favourites for several reasons:
Because the volcanic cone of Calderón Hondo is very well preserved, with a height of 278 m and a crater about 70 m deep.
Because the route is accessible for many levels, even for families or people who are not regular hikers.
Because the views from the top are spectacular: you will see Fuerteventura, the sea, the neighbouring islands, the volcanic badlands... a unique combo.
Because it is in the north of the island, near the village of Lajares, which makes it an excellent half-day excursion or combined with other activities.
For us at Viajeros Canallas, when we plan our first group trips to Fuerteventura (starting in 2026) we want this route to be included as a “must experience”. We will include it in the programme because it combines nature, emotion, landscape and accessibility.
Technical details of the route: what to expect?
Starting point and access
From the village of Lajares (municipality of La Oliva) take the road towards Majanicho until you reach the turn-off onto the dirt track Camino Calderas, which takes you to the car park near the volcanic cone.
For those who rent a car in Fuerteventura, it is convenient; for those who travel with us in a group, we consider it in the logistics and you will have the car included.
Distance, slope and duration
The circular route (or round trip) is about 4.5-5 km and takes about 1 to 1.5 hours to complete at a leisurely pace.
The gradient is moderate: at the beginning it is comfortable, and near the top it is a little more noticeable.
If you are in normal shape, it is not “a beating”, but it brings the satisfaction of crowning.
Recommended route
A good option is to leave the car, follow the well-marked trail, climb up the southern slope (less steep than the western slope) to the summit, look out over the crater and, if you feel like it, walk around the crater rim (approx. 1.3 km extra) to enjoy the 360º views.
A few tips: good shoes, water, sun protection and don't forget to stop and contemplate at the top.
What you'll see and key moments you won't forget
The perfectly defined crater from above: you will look down into the volcanic cone, about 70 m deep. It's a “wow” moment.
Imagine yourself there, wind in your face, silence except for the air and maybe a few birds screeching... that instant sticks in your mind.
Panoramic views from the top of the Calderón Hondo Volcano: the north of the island, the malpaís (lava field), the island of Lobos and Lanzarote in the background... unforgettable.
We recommend climbing when the light is good; towards sunset it can be magical.
Volcanic landscape and nature: volcanic rock, reddish-black colours, dim vegetation, goats and squirrels in the area... very different from the typical beach landscape, and that makes it special.
For us at Viajeros Canallas, this contrast “beach + volcano” is part of the essence of Fuerteventura that we want to transmit.
A geological story worth telling
This volcano is part of the Bayuyo Volcanoes alignment, the result of eruptions some 50,000 years ago that shaped the landscape of the north of the island and gave rise to extensive lava fields.

How to prepare for your ascent of the Calderón Hondo Volcano
What to bring
- Comfortable shoes with good grip (although the route is easy, volcanic rocks can be slippery).
- Sufficient water, because in the crater and on the way up, the sun can be very strong.
- Sunglasses, sun cream and cap.
- Well-charged camera or mobile phone: you'll want photos.
- Suitable clothing: although it is low, the wind can be a surprise.
When to do the route
Although it can be done all year round (Fuerteventura has a good climate), the best times are usually early in the morning or late in the afternoon, to avoid the strong heat and enjoy better light.
Avoid days with strong wind, as it can be more uncomfortable at the crater rim.
Level of difficulty and for whom
The hike to the Calderón Hondo Volcano is suitable for almost everyone, including families with children. However, if you have reduced mobility or are not used to walking, it is advisable to take it easy.
If you travel with us in a group of Scoundrel Travellers, we manage it with adapted pace, previous explanation and photo stops. We want each person to live the experience without stress.
Combination with other activities
Being in the north of the island, it can be combined with other interesting places: the village of Lajares, the dunes of Corralejo or the beach of Majanicho. Ideal for a full day trip.
For Scoundrel Traveller groups in 2026, we envision this tour as part of a “volcanic and coastal day”.
Testimony of a hiker's real experience in Calderón Hondo
“From the top of the crater I thought I was inside a moonscape... I turned around and saw the Atlantic, and I knew this was something I didn't expect and it was so powerful.”
Some visitors comment that they even saw small squirrels or goats on the edge of the crater. This gentle interaction with nature connects you even more with the environment.
At Viajeros Canallas we love that our travellers experience that moment of silence, surprise and beauty when they reach the top, because it's not just the route: it's the emotion of having done it together.
