What is the Pilgrim's Credential and what is it for?
The Pilgrim's Credential is the passport of the Camino de Santiago. Not only is it a nice souvenir of your adventure, but it is essential if you want to get the Compostela, the certificate that you get when you arrive at the Pilgrim's Office in Santiago.
But it's not just a piece of paper. During your route, you will stamp it in hostels, churches, bars and other places as proof of your journey. In addition, the credential gives you access to special accommodation for pilgrims, such as public and private hostels.
Where to get the Pilgrim's Credential?
This is the big question. Here are all the possible ways:
Viajeros Canallas includes it when you book your Camino with us, without you having to lift a finger. You can also get it in local tourist offices, churches and cathedrals, in hostels and lodgings on the Camino and in Associations of Friends of the Camino.
How do I obtain the Credential?
To obtain the Credential, you will generally need:
Identification: Carry with you an identity document such as an ID card or passport.
Donation: Often, a small donation is requested to cover the printing and maintenance costs of the shelters.
Form: Some associations may require you to fill in a form with your personal details.

How is the Credential used during the Camino?
Here we explain step by step how to use it:
Carry it with you at all times. Best in a plastic bag, so it doesn't get wet.
Seal at least twice a day. One in the morning (where you sleep), one in the evening (where you eat or visit).
Stamps in official places. Hostels, parishes, restaurants, souvenir shops... all of them usually have a stamp.
Guard it like gold. If you lose it, you also lose the chance to prove your way.

What if you don't have the Credential?
Well... bad news. Without Credencial you will not be able to access many albergues, and most importantly: you will not receive the Compostela. That is, you will not officially count as a pilgrim in front of the Cathedral.
If you do the Camino with Viajeros Canallas, this won't happen to you. We make sure everything is organised, including your official credential.
Did you know this? A trick that few tell
Many pilgrims buy their credentials in souvenir shops or on unofficial websites... and then it is not valid for the Compostela!
The only one that works is the official Credential issued by:
The Pilgrim's Office, Recognised Associations, Religious Orders of the Camino, Authorised Agencies such as Viajeros Canallas.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can I get the Credential in Madrid?
Yes, in several parishes, Camino associations and we also give it to you from Viajeros Canallas if you do the Camino with us.
What if I lose my Credential in the middle of the Camino?
You will need to get a new one. Keep your old stamps if you have them and explain this when you arrive at the Pilgrim's Office. This is not ideal.
Does the Credential expire?
It has no expiry date. You can use it years later if you have not completed the Camino in one go.
Are there digital credentials?
Yes, there are some apps in the testing phase, but the official one is still on paper. The Compostela requires physical stamps.
Can I obtain the Credential at any time of the year?
Yes, the Credential is available all year round, but it is best to get it before you start your trip.
